The Cambridge Charity of the Year enables AstraZeneca to:
  • Make a real impact on a local charity and its beneficiaries
  • Galvanise staff-led charitable activity around a shared cause
  • Contribute to our global community investment priority of supporting science, health and welfare led charitable causes
During the year we work closely with our selected charity in a number of ways, including
  • Fundraising via existing internal events
  • Mentoring and volunteering
  • Awareness-raising among our staff and across Cambridge
Charity of the Year Cambridge enables AstraZeneca and MedImmune to:
  • Make a significant difference to the local community
  • Promote science and health education and skills
  • Provide opportunities for employee participation and awareness
The programme runs over the calendar year, and the upcoming year’s chosen charity is announced at the annual AstraZeneca Cambridge Christmas party. Nominations are open year-round. The deadline for 2019 applications has now passed. Nominations received from 6 October will be stored for the 2020 selection process.
Charity of the Year nominations must adhere to the criteria below and will be reviewed against our guiding principles. Detailed submissions will be requested from shortlisted charities before a final selection is made by a panel of AstraZeneca colleagues representing different parts of the business in Cambridge in November.
Shortlisting is used to check that the charity meets the nomination criteria. All eligible nominees will be invited to submit a simple application, which the panel will use to judge what charity should be selected. Number of nominations does not affect its weighting or chances of being successful.
Nominations are made directly by AstraZeneca colleagues who care about a particular local charity, or charities can apply directly.
Once the final selection is made, a meeting will be scheduled as early as possible to agree an outline of commitment for the coming year. The senior leadership from the selected charity will also be invited to the AstraZeneca Christmas party.
During the year we work closely with our selected charity in a number of ways, including
  • Fundraising via existing internal events
  • Mentoring and volunteering
  • Awareness-raising among our staff and across Cambridge
